Dr. Ledford, RCCS Executive Director and Superintendent, along with students and faculty, are celebrating an exciting new addition to the school community: the RCCS Sustainable Garden and Outdoor Classroom. This project represents a meaningful step forward in hands-on, experiential learning for students.

The Sustainable Garden and Outdoor Classroom was made possible through a grant award from Sustainable Jersey and PSEG. Their support allowed RCCS to transform an outdoor space into a vibrant learning environment that connects education, sustainability, and community engagement.

This new garden is designed to function as more than just a green space. It serves as an outdoor classroom where students can actively engage with science concepts beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. Learning outdoors encourages curiosity, observation, and deeper understanding.

Students now have the opportunity to explore topics such as plant life cycles, ecosystems, soil health, and environmental responsibility in a real-world setting. These hands-on experiences help reinforce classroom lessons while fostering a stronger connection to nature.

The garden also reflects RCCS’s broader commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By integrating eco-friendly practices into everyday learning, the school is helping students develop an awareness of their role in caring for the planet.

A special acknowledgment is owed to Grade 3 Science Teacher, Ms. Tania Wilson, whose dedication and vision played a critical role in bringing this project to life. She took the initiative to write the grant proposal that secured the funding for the garden.

Ms. Wilson worked closely with Roseville Community Charter School leadership to ensure the project aligned with the school’s educational goals. Their collaboration helped shape the garden into a meaningful extension of the science curriculum.

Through this partnership, the school developed a garden experience that enhances academic instruction while also supporting creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills among students.

The outdoor classroom provides scholars with opportunities to learn through exploration, discovery, and direct interaction with their environment. This approach supports diverse learning styles and encourages student engagement.
